Computer animation is one of the most rapidly expanding areas of creative endeavor and technical development. Computer-generated sequences in feature films and television, digital special effects in feature films, computer-animated simulator rides, computer games and virtual environments are some of the more visible applications of 3D computer animation. The expansion of the market and the application areas of computer animation are predicted to have an explosive growth for many years to come. This is an exciting, fast-changing and rewarding area to be involved with. Well-qualified professionals in this area are, and will, in the foreseeable future, continue to be in great demand internationally and command substantial rewards. Over the past ten years both the technology and the creative application of this technology have reached such a level of maturity and sophistication that we begin to see a number of quite distinct and specialized application areas emerging. Such areas are computer animation, digital special effects and computer games.

Digital gaming is another promising area that is being seen as big opportunity worldwide and Indian software companies talk at length of its sheer potential. In the last year, around 30 Indian companies have ventured into gaming. Games revenues from the Internet, interactive TV and mobile phones is expected to zoom to 50 per cent by 2006. An International Data Corporation (IDC) report projects computer and video games' sales at US $16.9 billion by 2003, excluding the estimated $1.1 billion that will come in as on-line games revenues. According to another research report, by 2006, a combined 529 million people across the world will play mobile, interactive TV and online games.
